The oldest library of Pune
Pune Nagar Vachan Mandir is renowned as the oldest library in Pune and is a cherished historical landmark for knowledge seekers. Located in the heart of Budhwar Peth, it holds a significant place in the city’s history. Pune is widely recognized for its educational prowess and is often referred to as the Oxford of the East. It owes its intellectual foundation to esteemed personalities such as Prof Kero Laxman Chhatre, Daji Neelkanth Nagarkar, Justice Mahadeo Govind Ranade, Krishnasheth Chiplunkar, Lokhitwadi Gopalrao Hari Deshmukh, and many others.
These visionaries played a crucial role in establishing the library in 1848, initially known as the Poona Native General Library at Budharwada. This endeavour aimed to promote modern education among the local population during the British rule. The library’s influence spread like wildfire, creating awareness about education and nurturing intellectuals and scholars in Pune.
The library boasts an extensive collection of historical books, literature, politics, arts, science, history, psychology, and children’s books in English, Marathi, Hindi, and other languages. With an estimated count of over 70,000 books, it serves as a treasure trove of knowledge. Unfortunately, a devastating fire engulfed the library in 1879, resulting in its destruction. However, after several years, it was reconstructed at the same location in July 1889. Today, the building is recognized as a Grade 1 heritage site by the Pune Municipal Corporation.
In addition to its vast collection, the library organizes seminars, workshops, and activities, providing study materials for competitive exams to students. It also houses a valuable collection of reference books. Pune Nagar Vachan Mandir has initiated a social program called Manori Mahila Manch, specifically designed for the women members of the library. This program encourages their active participation in various reading and learning activities, aiming to enhance their education.
The library offers an affordable membership fee of 30 rupees per month, along with a deposit of 100 rupees. This provides students with an opportunity to access quality resources and benefit from the wisdom of renowned scholars and intellectuals.
